AMS Imports - Imported Rugs, Afghans, throws, carpet

Jordan Collection

The The Bani Hamida Weaving Center is part of the Jordan River Foundation and is involved in the women's rug and pillow projects. These weaving projects support over 1400 women in Jordan who carry on the traditional Bedouin techniques of weaving and sewing passed to them from their mothers and grandmothers. They are supported by Her Majesty Queen Rania, who is very involved in promoting handicrafts from Jordan and especially the rug weaving projects.

The new weaving center of Bani Hamida looks out over King Herods's Fort and the Dead Sea. Women can bring their children to the center and spin and weave rugs in the traditional way. The Bani Hamida weaving project started under the Save the Children Program in 1985 with only twelve women weaving. Now there are hundreds of women involved in the project spinning the wool, dyeing the yarn and weaving the rugs.

Under Save the Children project there has been money put back into the hands of the women to feed, clothe and educate their children. Recently a girls' school was built near the Bani Hamida villages, partially funded by the money earned through this weaving project. The traditional geometric designs are based on ancient carpet patterns indigenous to the tribes that migrated through this arid region for centuries.

All the Jordan rugs are made to order and delivered in 12-15 weeks. The dyes are chemical and the wool is handspun by the Bedouin women. All the rugs are hand woven and there is no limit to length or width for these rugs. They are woven in panels with heavy fringes that can be braided if you wish. There are three linear designs and one geometric design. AMS is happy to send line drawings and color yarns so you can order your Bedouin rug. This is a weaving project that benefits the women of Bani Hamida in Jordan.

The Al-Hweitat Maroon Rug from the AMS Imports Jordan Collection was the winner of the Magnificent Carpet Award at the International Area Rug Market in Atlanta!
